County Surplus

What is Surplus Property and how do we dispose of it?

Surplus property is tangible property that is no longer of use to any County department.  Surplus Property may include anything from office supplies and furniture to vehicles and heavy equipment.  Surplus Property does not include Real Estate (Real Property).  Please see the County Real Estate website for questions related to Real Property.

Before releasing any surplus property, the County of Orange makes every attempt to reuse and/or reassign the property to another department within the County. If we are unable, we have several methods of disposition available to us.

Our preferred method of disposition is via our Surplus School Donation Program. In May 2007, after Board of Supervisors approval, the program became a reality. This new program allowed County surplus items to be donated to local schools operating under the Orange County Department of Education. If you are an Orange County School and are interested in joining the program, please contact Neil Jessen, Surplus Program Manager at (714) 567-7341.

We also donate items to a select list of 501 (c) (3) non-profits that serve the citizens of Orange County. If you are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit and would like to participate in this program, please click here to download an application.

The last step in our disposition phase is to sell the items to the general public via our contracted online auctioneer. The current auctioneer on contract with The County of Orange is GovDeals. To view and/or purchase County surplus items, please visit their website at http://www.govdeals.com/orangecounty. Items are listed on an ongoing basis as they become available.
