What is Surplus Property and how do we dispose of it?
Surplus property is tangible property that is no longer of use to any County department because it is obsolete, uneconomical to repair, or valued only for its base contents. Surplus Property may include anything from office supplies and furniture to vehicles and heavy equipment.
Before releasing any surplus property, the County of Orange makes every attempt to reuse and/or reassign the property to another department within the County. If we are unable, we have several methods of disposition available to us.
Our preferred method of disposition is via our Surplus School Donation Program. In May 2007, after Board of Supervisors approval, the program became a reality. This new program allowed County surplus items to be donated to local schools operating under the Orange County Department of Education. As of March 2009, more than 2,600 surplus computers and hundreds of other related items have been donated to Orange County Schools. If you are an Orange County School and are interested in joining the program, please call Neil Jessen, Surplus Program Manager at (714) 567-7341.
We also donate items to a pre-approved list of 501 (c) (3) non-profits serving the citizens of Orange County. This program has room for up to 25 non-profits per County fiscal year (July through June). A new group of 25 is selected each year. If you are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit and would like to be part of the program, please click here to download an application. Instructions for submitting the application are included on the form.
The last step in our disposition phase is to send the items to our contracted, third party, auctioneer. The current auctioneer on contract with The County of Orange is General Auction Company (GAC). GAC maintains a mailing list and handles all registration requirements. GAC is located at:
General Auction Company
7015 Knott Avenue Buena Park, California
Listings of sale items are not available until two days prior to the auction and can be found on their website.
